Learn about E-mail Frauds
If you are a regular Internet user, you should know about E-mails that appear to be from a well-known source but can put you at risk. These E-mails are known as spoof E-mails. They are also known as phishing or hoax E-mails.
Sometimes such E-mails can be difficult to spot. They may ask you to click on a link back to what appears to be a real company’s website and provide personal information. In addition to luring you to a website, simply clicking on such links could result in viruses entering your computer system. Spoof E-mails are commonly after:
- Password or PIN numbers
- Credit card information
- Social Security Number
- Bank account information
Spotting a spoof E-mail or website can sometimes be difficult. There are some things to look for that should raise suspicion:
- Sense of urgency: The E-mail may talk about your account being disabled if you do not click on a link.
- The E-mails may have spelling errors. These mistakes allow the spoof E-mails to avoid being detected by spam filters and help them reach your mailbox.
